Why Being Yourself is a Bad Idea
The advice to 'just be yourself' can be confusing and chaotic. Jamie speaks on the countercultural idea suggested by Graham Tomlin in his book 'Why Being Yourself is a Bad Idea'. To address this question and the cultural moment we find ourselves in, he also refers to the title of another publication, Martin Luther King, Jr's final book: 'Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?' Jamie encourages us to delve into Ephesians 4 and 5 which address the chaos around us and within us. He challenges us, even in the midst of the pandemic, to be strengthened and matured in love, holiness and unity so we can be the church for the sake of others.
Trust vs Control
Amidst the chaos, which will win, trust or control? Having operated with the illusion of at least some sense of control in our lives, will we trust God with our anxieties and even our whole lives? In this battle of trust vs control Peter invites us to clothe ourselves with humility towards one another, and Jamie explores the strange dynamic of humbling ourselves under God's mighty hand so that He might lift us up.
Purpose
2021 has begun and the chaos has only escalated. Over the next five weeks we are exploring the chaos of the current moment both for our culture and for us individually. To begin with, Jamie asks how we can have purpose for our lives and the year ahead. He urges us that this comes as we experience God’s glory for ourselves, just like we see in Isaiah 6.
