Will you show us the Father?
H continues our Questioning Jesus series with Philip's question 'Will you show us the Father?'.
John 14:8-21
How can we know the way?
What does Jesus say to his followers who are troubled? He says that ‘I am the way the truth and the life'. Tim explores this famous statement and why Jesus being the only way to God is such good news!
Where are you going?
Jago continues our Questioning Jesus sermon series and helps us think through how to respond to “troubles with death” and “troubles with life”. We see the huge comfort of why Jesus can legitimately tell us “do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:1) even in the midst of all sorts of troubled times.
Who is it?
Jago asked the challenging question – “Are you faking it as a Christian?”, and helped us to think through what to do when we recognise elements of hypocrisy within us, and how Jesus responds to our hypocrisy. He also spoke into the challenging situation of high profile Christian leaders who have turned out to be frauds and fakes.
Are you my Servant?
Josh started our new series ‘Questioning Jesus’ looking at John 13, answering the question posed by the disciples to Jesus ‘Are you my Servant?’. Josh encouraged us to be reliant on Jesus, rooted in who he says we are and choose to live a radical life of humility and love because Jesus first showed us how to love.
John 13:1-17
Godly Habits
As we launch the HTC Get Together Week, Reema explores the Godly habits we are instructed to live out in Hebrews 10. These include not giving up meeting together in light of Christ's return.
All The More
As we launch the HTC Get Together Week, Jamie speaks on familiar verses from Hebrews including that we should not give up meeting together. Given the current context, he looks at the heightened importance of this command and how it leads to us living an ‘all the more’ life.
Christ in the City
At a time when many people are questioning the future of the city, and thinking that “the grass is greener” in the countryside, Jago speaks on Christ in the City from Revelation 21. He helps us to see God’s passion for the city, and how the City is our ultimate future. He challenges us to stay connected to the city in the present, and get connected to the City of the future.
Christ in Cancel Culture
A culture of condemnation and accusation has become so widespread that it has been given a name - “cancel culture”. Tim unpacks Jesus’ famous teaching on being salt and light, and explores what it means to bring Jesus’ life and hope in such a divided time. How can we be salt and light in a cancel culture?
Why Being Yourself is a Bad Idea
The advice to 'just be yourself' can be confusing and chaotic. Jamie speaks on the countercultural idea suggested by Graham Tomlin in his book 'Why Being Yourself is a Bad Idea'. To address this question and the cultural moment we find ourselves in, he also refers to the title of another publication, Martin Luther King, Jr's final book: 'Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?' Jamie encourages us to delve into Ephesians 4 and 5 which address the chaos around us and within us. He challenges us, even in the midst of the pandemic, to be strengthened and matured in love, holiness and unity so we can be the church for the sake of others.
Trust vs Control
Amidst the chaos, which will win, trust or control? Having operated with the illusion of at least some sense of control in our lives, will we trust God with our anxieties and even our whole lives? In this battle of trust vs control Peter invites us to clothe ourselves with humility towards one another, and Jamie explores the strange dynamic of humbling ourselves under God's mighty hand so that He might lift us up.
Purpose
2021 has begun and the chaos has only escalated. Over the next five weeks we are exploring the chaos of the current moment both for our culture and for us individually. To begin with, Jamie asks how we can have purpose for our lives and the year ahead. He urges us that this comes as we experience God’s glory for ourselves, just like we see in Isaiah 6.
Christmas Day
In an uplifting message from our Christmas Day service, Tim asks the questions is there more to life than lockdown? Is there more to life than this?
Contemporary Carols
It’s been a year of having to make adjustments, and 24 hours after the news about London entering Tier 4 for Christmas, Jamie asks how we can make the most out of Christmas.
Carols by Candlelight
In our Carols by Candlelight service Jago spoke to us about the importance of the Christmas message and how it brings Good News of Great Joy. He commented on the mess of 2020 and how these difficulties have highlighted our need for salvation through the Messiah. He challenges us to rely on Jesus and if we are uncertain of who He is to explore this for ourselves.
Carols on the Common
Our friend Pat Allerton, dubbed ’The Portable Priest’ by the media during lockdown, joined us at Carols on the Common to share a Christmas message. In a year dominated by coronavirus, which is the shape of a crown, he speaks about another King who comes as good news amidst all the difficulties of the past year.
Building Up in a Time of Tearing Down
Josh finished our Don't Lose Heart series by helping us to work through a Holy 360, looking back, in, up, across and knowing what God speaks when he looks down on us. He encouraged us that this should lead to knowing Jesus better and being more equipped to live for him in everything.
Building Up in a Time of Tearing Down
To finish off our Don't Lose Heart series H challenges us to do a Holy 360 appraisal of our lives, testing our faith so that we can be re-focused on Jesus. Finally we were reminded of the amazing grace of Jesus and his extravagant love!
Strength in Weakness
As Tim continues in our series in 2 Corinthians, we see that Paul had learnt the secret of the Christian life that we all need to know! The wonder of the Christian gospel is that God’s power is shown most clearly in our weakness and not our strength.
