Day 2: John the Baptist

| Advent 2017

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous – to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.’

Luke 1:15-17

John the Baptist had quite the assignment. To prepare the way of the Lord. He was the one who quoted Isaiah the prophet saying "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.’” (John 1:23) He declares “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

He lived to point away from himself. The Swiss theologian Karl Barth wrote that 'The model of biblical witness is John the Baptist. Could anyone point away from himself more completely?’ I remind myself of an image of a signpost for myself. Not just because I’m tall, but I want to point people to Jesus. But how do we do this? We read that an angel of the Lord says that John the Baptist would be ‘filled with the Holy Spirit before he was even born.’

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me today and enable me to point people to you today.
